Entity-Based SEO: A Practical Guide

Search engines stopped being keyword-matching machines a long time ago. Google's Knowledge Graph, launched back in 2012, marked the shift from "strings to things" — from matching the letters in a query to understanding the entities behind it: people, places, products, concepts, and the relationships between them.

What is an entity?

An entity is any distinct, well-defined thing: "personal trainer" is an entity. So are "certification", "NASM", "strength training", and "muscle hypertrophy". Entities are language-independent — Google understands that "entrenador personal" and "personal trainer" are the same thing.

When Google evaluates a page about personal training, it doesn't just count keyword occurrences. It asks: does this page cover the entities a genuine expert would cover? A trustworthy page about becoming a personal trainer probably mentions certifications, insurance, client assessments, programming, and nutrition basics — even if none of those were in the target keyword.

Why entity coverage matters for ranking

  1. Topical authority. Covering related entities signals depth. Ten thin pages targeting keyword variations lose to one comprehensive page that maps the topic's entity neighborhood.
  2. Semantic relevance. Entities let Google match your page to queries that never contain your keywords. Rich entity coverage widens the net of queries you can rank for.
  3. AI answers. Large language models — the ones powering AI Overviews and chat assistants — are trained on entity relationships. Content with clear entity structure is easier for them to cite and summarize.
